What Is ABA Therapy?

Evidence-based therapy, built around how your child actually learns

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is one of the most researched approaches for helping children with autism and related developmental needs build new skills. At its core, ABA breaks bigger goals, like using words to ask for something, taking turns with a peer, or following a morning routine, into small, teachable steps, then uses positive reinforcement to help your child build and keep those skills.
At Guidance Center, ABA is never delivered from a script. Every session follows the goals set in your child’s Individual Treatment Plan, and our team continuously adjusts based on how your child responds.
What ABA therapy builds
Functional communication and language skills
Social skills like turn-taking, sharing, and play
Daily living and self-help skills
Reduced frequency of behaviors that get in the way of learning

How We Deliver ABA

From your child’s plan to real, everyday skills

01

Start With the Plan

Every session is guided by the specific goals set in your child’s Individual Treatment Plan.
02

Build Rapport First

Our therapists take time to build trust and make sessions feel safe before introducing new skills.
03

Teach Through Play

Skills are practiced through structured activities and natural play, not rote drilling.
04

Track & Adjust

We collect data every session and adjust the approach as your child progresses.
Often Paired With ABA

Many treatment plans combine ABA with other therapies

Speech and occupational therapy often run alongside ABA to support communication and daily living skills from every angle.
Common Questions

Questions families ask about ABA therapy

Weekly hours are set in your child’s Individual Treatment Plan based on their specific needs and CMDE results, and can range from a few hours to a more intensive schedule.

Sessions are delivered by trained Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs), supervised by our BCBA-level clinical team who oversee your child’s plan.

Both. Sessions blend structured teaching with natural, play-based learning, so your child is building skills while engaged in activities they enjoy.

For most families enrolled in Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare, or MA-TEFRA, ABA therapy is covered as part of the EIDBI benefit once a treatment plan is in place.

Our team collects data every session and shares regular updates on progress toward the goals in your child’s treatment plan.
